L-THEANINE

Herbs around us

Theanine is an amino acid found in tea and some mushrooms. It comes in two forms: L-theanine and D-theanine. L-theanine is the most common form. Theanine is similar to glutamate, a naturally occurring amino acid. Glutamate helps transmit nerve impulses in the brain. Theanine sometimes acts like glutamate in the body. But other times it seems to block the effects of glutamate. Theanine might also affect the brain chemicals GABA, dopamine, and serotonin. People take L-theanine to boost mental function. It is also used for anxiety, cognitive issues, stress, and other conditions, although solid scientific evidence is lacking for these uses. Do not confuse theanine with threonine, a different amino acid. They are not the same.

What are L-theanine's Benefits?

Memory and cognitive skills: Taking L-theanine orally may help healthy individuals stay focused. However, it's unclear if combining L-theanine with caffeine is more effective than using either alone.

Recommended Dosages

There is interest in using L-theanine for various other purposes, but reliable information on its efficacy is lacking. L-theanine is naturally found in tea and some mushrooms. As a supplement, adults commonly use it in doses of 200-400 mg daily for 4-8 weeks. Consult a healthcare provider to determine the best dosage for specific conditions.

Precautions & Warnings

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: There is insufficient reliable information regarding the safety of L-theanine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. To be cautious, avoid using it. Children: L-theanine is possibly safe when taken orally for a short period. Doses of 400 mg daily have been safely used for up to 6 weeks in boys aged 8-12 years.

Side Effects

When taken orally: L-theanine is possibly safe for short-term use. Doses up to 900 mg daily have been safely used for 8 weeks. Its safety for long-term use is unclear and might cause mild side effects such as headache or sleepiness.
